strong foundations
A children’s song goes in part: A wise man built his house upon rock……a foolish man built his house upon sand.
"Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare." — Isaiah 55:2 (NIV)
We can learn a lot from children’s songs and the Bible. These references apply to life’s decisions, including how we fuel our bodies. The choices we make determine whether we build a strong foundation for health or accelerate nature’s inevitable wear and tear.
Why Should We Care?
While some things are out of our control, much is within it. We can’t afford to let our lives drift aimlessly like a car rolling downhill in neutral—it will crash, harming or even destroying us. The same applies to our bodies. This life is a blessing, and we must treat it with the same respect and urgency we give other valuable gifts.
Where Do We Start?
No matter your age or current habits, you might feel overwhelmed at the thought of taking charge of your health. You may wonder, does Maggy understand how hard this is? I do. I struggle with stubborn habits that cling to me, refusing to let go. Instead, I arm myself daily and fight. I celebrate even the smallest victories, and so can you.
Take a moment to write down 5–10 things you know you need to change. You don’t need a full food diary yet—just note what sabotages your health and wellness. It could be unhealthy food choices, mindless eating, or poor shopping habits. Beyond diet, consider emotional well-being: bitterness, unforgiveness, blame, or lack of sleep. Small things can significantly impact the quality of our lives.
What’s Next?
Now that you’ve identified your challenges, it’s time to take action.
Forgive Yourself – Don’t dwell on past mistakes or ask, Why did I do this? That won’t help. If anything, you’ll only come up with excuses that keep you stuck.
Find Support – Whether you prefer an accountability partner or working solo, remember that no battle is won alone. Seek encouragement from those on the same journey.
Celebrate Every Win – Even acknowledging what needs to change is a victory. Progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about persistence.
A Question to Ponder
Will you build your house upon a rock or upon the sand?
Will you spend your money on what is not good for you and does not nourish you?
May this message encourage you to treat your body as the invaluable gift from God that it is. While you’re at it, pass these lessons on to the young ones around you.
